who we are

My Story

My story starts in a place of adversity. Growing up  I was faced with many challenges in Sri Lanka. I, just like many children struggled with the uncertainty of the future. Growing up wasn’t easy and I still remember, as clear as day, looking up at the stars and thinking what if I could reach that place? My dream and passion to help those who face adversity and to empower and strengthen vulnerable people began to grow.

Name: TANIA FERNANDO

Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in Sociology, Diploma in Drug Abuse Management (University of Colombo, Sri Lanka), Certificate IV in Disability, Agedcare, Leisure and lifestyle, Mental Health, Community Services, Training & Assessment (TAE)

Designation: Disability Support / Educator

Perseverance budded within me as my academic journey, quite the bumpy road, progressed. I overcame my challenges and eventually came to work with the United Nations as a volunteer at first and then a project officer. I coordinated a regional project on HIV and drugs, working with multiple domestic and international stakeholders to encourage domestic drug prevention in Sri Lanka. I worked closely with vulnerable populations to integrate them into mainstream society seamlessly and with the support they needed.

My dreams to help people see their value, despite their circumstances and disposition was becoming realised and I began to become an empathetic, passionate and dedicated individual. I received various awards for my projects and work during this time from Sri Lanka’s federation of NGOS against drug abuse (03/03/2011) and for helping vulnerable peoples during the International Women’s Day commemoration in 2010.

Phase of my story

2011 saw a new phase of my story. I moved to Australia with my family and began afresh as a personal care worker and lifestyle assistant. In 2013 I moved forward and became a trainer and assessor specialising in aged care and disability courses. My work, dedication and passion never ended and was once again realised in supporting children with special needs in Springvale Park Special Developmental Schools where I was privileged to work for 7 years. Throughout my journey here my knowledge and skills were enriched by the valuable experience I gained whilst working collaboratively with the allied health team to improve the functional skills of students and adults with complex needs to support their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. I continue to help those who are vulnerable, to help them realise their independence, value, and promote integration.

As I work, having grown from my experiences with the UN, starting anew in a different home and living up to the dreams of my 10-year-old self I believe that any individual has the potential to live to their fullest when they receive the right support. With the set of skills, I have gained and matured through my wealth of experience, me and my team work to the best of our abilities to empower, grow and support those with diverse needs.
